Totally thinking out loud here...

I’m sure we’ve all seen what cash money and skill can do. But what can the average oppo do with low cash and low skills?

Mr. Regular’s Ford Festiva review got me thinking. What sort of awesomeness could we do if we had a running $800 Ford Festiva, a sawzall, some sheet aluminum, a rivet gun, and maybe a pipe bender with some piping?

People have proven that a little bit of chopping and a little bit of modding can turn the Festiva into something that looks like a blast:

So what’s the legality on this? How far can we go in street legal form to honor Chapman’s pursuit of lightness?

The universal requirements are:

Horn

Engine hood

Windshield

Windshield wipers

Mirrors

Steering

Seat belts

Brakes (including parking brake)

Tires

Wheel Assembly

Exhaust

Exhaust emission system

Hi/Lo beam indicator

Headlights

Tail lights

Stop lights

Turn signals

License plate with lighting

Reflectors

Bumpers

Now look at it:

So much excess because that’s what people expect a car to look like. How far can it be taken? I can’t be the first person to ask or consider this...

When we started racing Lemons in 2008 I was really only comfortable changing oil and brake pads. When we got the escort I learned by doing. Today YouTube is your friend. There are how toos for all the mechanical stuff. All you really need is a good Craftman socket set,a jack, jack stands and a set of metric wrenches. Now I have pulled and rebuilt engines, swapped transmissions and a bunch of other stuff

If this is something you want to play with then do it. You have to start somewhere.
